The painting simply wants to remember and celebrate the pagan martyr Hypatia of Alexandria, murdered by Christian fundamentalists in the first decades of the 4th century AD. The figure is imagined in almost full profile, with her head bowed in an absorbed, thoughtful attitude. She wears a hat of black fabric, heavy and crimped, tall and cylindrical with shelves, as if it were a “magus”; a simple dress of the same fabric as the hat. She wears a golden circular earring. The head is surmounted by a band painted with golden reflections where her name is engraved in Greek letters. S.B.
