(The Pending Sante)
We are inside the evocative architectural space of the Medina of Cordoba, later reconverted and consecrated as a Catholic church after the Reconquest of Isabella and Philip.
All the iconic elements are there; a naked body, a column, the arrows, the halo: these are typical of St. Sebastian. Except that the body suspended in "bondage" from the column is that of a beautiful woman whose agony, somewhere between ecstatic and orgasmic, is caused not by the arrows of cruel executioners, but by those fiery ones of love and passion thrown by a cheerful Cupid! Taken as needed directly from the Loggia of Cupid and Psyche at the Farnesina, frescoed by Raphael's workshop. S.B.
